When you start learning how to draw most artists want to focus on certain fundamentals like shading and perspective, but line weight is an incredibly important skill that has a huge impact on your art. But, what exactly is line weight?

Most people think of it as just “thickness”, but it’s actually about contrast and impact. In this course, you’ll learn how to draw complex organic objects using nothing but line. We’ll explore how the specific character of your lines helps communicate the essence of your subject, and you’ll master the three line weight method so you know exactly where and how to apply line weight to your drawings. Additionally, you’ll learn how to effectively use hatching to build volume and form.

After we cover these important fundamentals we’ll get to play and dive into more advanced concepts like opening your lines . This is the lesson that will have you drawing like a professional. Remember ” The most important line is the one you do not draw !!! These are crucial skills that will elevate your art and make your work look like a pro’s.

Why I Made This Course

This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart as I have been obsessed with improving my line quality for over three decades, but I could never find very good resources out there to help me understand the concept. As a result, I have had to learn the hard way through lots of trial and error. Along my “line weight” journey I’ve walked away with a lot of important concepts that I can distill and teach you in just a few hours. My ultimate goal here is to save you a lot of time trying to figure out this subject on your own and I’ve put it together in a way that both beginners and seasoned professionals will be able to benefit from.
Who Am I?

I’m Len Nicholas, also known as Toyagogo on social media and I have over 20 years of experience as a freelance concept designer and illustrator in the toy, film, and gaming industries. Along the way I’ve worked with top clients like Ubisoft, Hasbro, and Silvergate Studios. I’m now focused on passing on my knowledge to the next generation of artists.

My teaching method is deeply rooted in practical experience and a passion for making complex concepts accessible and I focus on a hands-on, project-based learning approach that encourages students to apply what they’re learning in real-time. Each of my lessons is structured to build upon the previous one, ensuring that you not only understand individual techniques but also see how they interconnect to enhance your overall drawing skills.
